Chief Architect, Primary Storage Engineering

(may work remote, anywhere in USA)

Role Summary:

Responsible for applied research or advanced engineering in the development of new products, materials, or processes. May serve as the lead strategist for a technology or a collection of technologies that constitute a solution. May also serve as the lead architect for a product or product family. Responsibilities include the assimilation and understanding of the industry and competitive environment for a given technology or product line, and the derivation of a technology/product strategy from this information. Duties include leading technology investigations, performing strategic analysis of the industry capabilities, and developing recommendations, which influence the technical product strategy and/or definition of products for a given product line including evaluation of potential acquisitions and vendor partner opportunities. Engages design teams, systems engineering, marketing teams, suppliers, and business unit leaders and executives to ensure the strategy or product architecture meets Dell’s requirement of product leadership for the given technology area or product line. Responsible for generating Intellectual Property

Main responsibilities:

1) Technology roadmap – Understand industry trends and in partnership with senior leadership assist in developing the strategic direction for technology initiatives.

  • Work with different constituencies to develop our technology roadmap for all Primary Storage’s products. Constituencies include product group technology leads, Product Managers, CTIO, Marketing, Sales/SEs.

  • Work deeply with the product teams (engineers and PMs) to drive this technology roadmap into products.

2) Innovation – help reignite the innovation engine within the Division.

  • Be the champion for innovation across teams and locations, leverage the Technologist community to drive innovation initiatives.

  • Be a mentor and help drive mentoring programs for grooming our next wave of technology leaders and innovators.

  • Lead the development of new-concept prototypes collaborating with engineers from product teams and help drive them into the products

3) Evangelizing our technology – be one of the technology faces of the division with customers, analysts, partners, etc.

  • Engage with strategic customers to represent our products at a deep technical level, and also understand where they are going and bring back to product teams.

  • Engage with Marketing to help drive technical thought leadership image both outside and inside the company. Help develop compelling technically grounded collateral for our product portfolio – presentations, videos, blogs, etc. and deliver the messages at major events

  • Engage with our technical partners, like VmWare and MS, to make sure technology roadmaps align and technical requirements (both ways) are identified and addressed.

Expected Activities

  • Coordinate technology strategies with technical leadership

  • Work with Engineering and Product Managers to ensure technology strategy gets implemented

  • Work with field technical sales leaders to drive revenue and bring the voice of the customer to bear on product strategy

  • Work with Marketing and industry organizations to drive thought leadership image in industry

  • Work with Legal to ensure our IP gets protected

  • Work with HR to drive technical talent and leadership development

  • Work with customers, partners and analysts to drive sales and shape our strategy

  • Work with strategic technology partners on futures

Qualifications

Must have skills:

  • Typically requires 15+ years of related experience, building enterprise storage products with a Bachelor’s degree; or 12+ years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 8+ years experience; or equivalent experience

  • Excellent knowledge and deep understanding of replication technologies and server migration strategies. Understanding and experience of server/ storage/ networking and client technologies.

Nice to have skills:

  • Deep technical knowledge of a broad set of IT technology & solutions

  • Demonstrated ability to innovate, evangelize, and lead/influence without supervisory authority
