Dell Server Mechanical Architect, Technical Staff in Austin, Texas
This position is for a Technical Staff Mechanical Architect in the Server Cloud and Emerging Technologies (CET) organization. Products include new Telco, Edge, Storage, and HPC products. Work will focus on leading the overall upfront mechanical architecture including design and implementation dependencies. This is a broad and exciting role that includes working across multiple teams including Marketing, Chief Technology Office, ODM partners, and other engineering functions to develop the best overall mechanical direction. Individual should be able to effectively transition bulk of product development to other team members and suppliers. Individual should have excellent skills in interfacing with internal customers and Executive audiences.
This role will be part of a team of highly motivated engineers and architects who are responsible for CET product architecture (high level engineering). The Mechanical Architect will be responsible for working with a cross-functional team dedicated to designing, delivering, and deploying solutions for CET's new product set.
Duties will include creating mechanical architectural and design specifications for the development organization, providing customers solution alternatives based on existing portfolio products or industry technologies, working with other cross-Dell architectural organizations to ensure optimal product leverage and system level design of complex server, storage, and HPC systems. The Mechanical Architect will have responsibility leading mechanical technology investigations, performing competitive analysis of industry capabilities, and investigating mechanical options that complement CET hardware to create complete solutions, and developing recommendations for product strategy.
Duties will also include engaging design teams, marketing, suppliers, operations and business leaders to ensure the CET products are industry leading.
Additional responsibilities include:
Develops long-term mechanical system strategies based on the technical and business information. The strategies are developed with knowledge from the industry marketing, development, manufacturing, procurement and customer input.
Drives for internal and external alignment of the CET system level engineering strategy.
Develops long-term technical relationships with the vendor base for the core technology or solutions. The relationships should create a technical interface, driving those mechanical requirements into next generation vendor designs.
Identifies and develops differentiation and/or solution opportunities, provides technical information and makes recommendations to marketing, procurement, engineering, customers, and business executives.
Takes a lead role in driving new CET mechanical product solutions to internal customers and stakeholders.
Generates intellectual property.
Participates and leads strategic mechanical initiatives for improvements in leverage, reuse, process, quality, and cost.
Works cross-functionally with other technical leaders, key suppliers and ODM’s.
Capable of generating feasibility studies of mechanical and system level concepts.
Knowledge of mechanical server architecture and exposure to system level design engineering. Understanding of rack-level and datacenter-level designs are a plus.
Server mechanical engineering experience desired with industry knowledge of key technologies.
Experience with new product development life cycle and driving cross-functional development efforts from concept to planning to development is required.
The candidate should have proficient understanding of appropriate mechanical technologies, vendor products, and competitor's offerings along with the ability to analyze options for critical elements and features in order to determine the optimal selection.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, setting priorities and managing to committed schedules.
Demonstrated ability to create detailed mechanical architecture specifications and drive business cases for new products and features.
Experienced with rapid prototype technologies.
10+ years of mechanical and/or system engineering experience with BSME, MSME, or equivalent.
Experience with 3D CAD systems (CREO experience required) and structural and thermal analysis techniques for small to large electronics packaging systems (Flotherm and ANSYSexperience a plus).
