Senior Engineering Manager, Foundation Engineering Team – Dell EMC Unstructured Data Storage

Unstructured Data Storage, a division of Dell EMC, is the leader in scale-out file and object storage systems. Isilon’s OneFS and ECS’s object clustered storage and data management solutions drive unique business and economic value for customers by maximizing the performance of their mission critical applications, workflows, and processes. Isilon and ECS enable enterprises and research organizations world-wide to manage massive and rapidly growing amounts of file and object based data in a highly-scalable, easy-to-manage, and cost effective way.

This role has ownership of the products and services delivered by our Platform Engineering team within Unstructured Data’s Engineering Organization. The key success factors of this team’s charter include:

  • Responsibility for defining and building the future of modern, scalable, robust and elegant OneFS and ECS storage platforms

  • Responsibility for defining Isilon and ECS strategic roadmap for and executing on Software Defined Storage within converged, hyper converged, and cloud storage products

  • Align on a single platform of management and orchestration for hardware, virtualized, and cloud storage platforms

  • Stay current with evolving storage and networking technologies, incorporating those that provide a compelling product value to Isilon’s storage portfolio

  • Ability to work cross functionally with the entire product management, engineering, and manufacturing organizations to take a product from design, to implementation, to market

As the leader of these very talented, very diverse teams, you will provide product vision, business leadership and entrepreneurship, plus contribute positively as a member of Engineering’s Leadership Team to achieve goals division-wide. You will use your strong technical competencies and operational savvy to take charge of multiple teams responsible for these revenue generating products/services. This is a great opportunity to bring modern tools and technologies into the portfolio for Isilon OneFS and ECS unstructured storage. Success in this role will be defined by your ability to execute along the following lines:

  • With diplomacy and credibility, lead and mentor strong engineering teams to operationally deliver on strategic milestones in future releases

  • Be the internal and external voice of your teams and clearly articulate in an audience-appropriate manner the issues at hand and the plan of action so as to engender confidence in the audience

  • Advocate through your actions and leadership practices the Isilon core values which include: think customers first; deliver; be your best & expect the best

  • Effectively set schedules and ensure successful and efficient delivery that is on time and within budget

  • Successfully recruit, develop and retain top tier engineering talent for Isilon and your team.


  • EE, CompE, CS, or BBA degree; or equivalent experience

  • Success in designing and shipping storage platforms

  • Strong understanding of storage technologies and protocols

  • Experience with working with hardware and firmware teams in storage related development

  • Experience in working with cloud based storage environments

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills in conjunction with an executive level presence that lends itself to managing both technical & executive level personnel both internally and externally to the Engineering organization

  • Experience working with remote teams across the globe

  • 8+ years of successfully developing software, having shipped multiple products or services

  • Of those years of engineering experience, a proven track record of successfully leading/performance-managing that team to deliver revenue-generating software

  • 2+ years of experience managing multiple teams simultaneously of greater than 25 persons in size

Desired Domain Expertise:

  • Platform development experience, preferably in the storage field

  • Node/Cluster Configuration Monitoring Analytics or similar storage management systems

  • Proficiency in open source and Windows engineering environments, also agile/scrum practices

  • Hands on software development experience in C/C++ and/or Python

  • Third platform practices and strategy.

  • Software defined storage

  • Experience developing in an Agile environment, with waterfall elements
