The Unstructured Data Storage Division of DELL EMC is seeking a talented and experienced Engineering Manager to join their leadership team.

Our teams build the network interfaces our customers use to access their data, enterprise-level services to it, and the platform to persistently store it. We create extensible modern file system and data services, including journaling, quotas, snapshots and replication, while delivering future capabilities for new workloads such as Hadoop as well as scaling existing NAS workloads to huge levels and with non-disruptive operations to keep businesses running 24x7x365. Our identity management technologies ensure that we can work in almost any environment and provide our customers with seamless integration to both directory services and storage protocols.

What technologies do we use and build?

We strive to use the best tool for the job at hand. We build our core infrastructure and network code in a combination of C and C++ with control functions leveraging the flexibility and rapid development provided by Python. We use git as our source control system and leverage GitHub Enterprise based workflows for building and testing our code in a continuous integration model. Creating internal clusters for testing and development is smooth and easy using our automated builds and virtual deployments.

JOB SUMMARY

As an Engineering Manager, you will be able to leverage both your leadership and management skills as well as your technical expertise every day. The Isilon Engineering organization is critical to Dell EMC’s Data Lake solutions. You will guide a development team to drive product features from initial requirements to final, on-time completion in Isilon’s OneFS product releases. Your experience in leading a team of highly capable engineers, delivering according to plan, and setting the strategic direction for core platform infrastructure will help us create industry leading products for Isilon within Dell EMC.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead a software engineering team to develop and validate software solutions on Isilon’s OneFS platform to enhance our customer’s ability to manage multiple petabytes of data.

  • Demonstrated experience attracting, developing, and retaining professional talent within a highly competent team of software engineers.

  • Vet architectural and design decisions within your area of core competency and advise other teams in cross functional technical decisions.

  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills across multiple teams enabling engineers to obtain accurate requirements, derive detailed designs, and produce high quality implementations.

  • Solve complex technical problems that deal with high scale, concurrency, and performance.

  • Contribute to the culture of quality throughout our broader engineering organization.

  • Possess a strong aptitude exploring new technologies and understanding how to apply them to new product releases and in customer facing support scenarios.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS in Computer Science or related technical field, and 10+ years industry experience with network protocols, UNIX/Linux systems software development, file systems, or related field. At least 2+ years is expected to have been in a development management role.

  • Ability to hire, build, and exercise performance management of software engineering teams.

  • Ability to lead a software engineering team through the software development lifecycle (feedback driven models and agile processes preferred).

  • Experience working on multiple product release cycles.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills in conjunction with an executive level presence that lends itself to managing both technical & senior level personnel both internally and externally to the Engineering organization.

  • Experience working with remote teams across the globe.

  • Experience in the development of large scale system software.

DESIRED DOMAIN EXPERTISE

  • An understanding of the UNIX operating environment including system configuration, memory management, system calls, and multiplexed I/O.

  • Experience with network analysis tools (e.g. Message Analyzer, Network Monitor, Wireshark, tcpdump).

  • Knowledge of directory service protocols (e.g. Active Directory, LDAP, NIS) and authentication protocols (e.g. SSPI/GSS-API, NTLMSSP, Kerberos, OAuth) is a plus.

  • UNIX and Microsoft access control models and interoperability challenges is desired.

  • Knowledge of kernel and user mode technologies.

  • Understanding of distributed file systems or network file protocols such as SMB or NFS, or experience in data communication protocols is strongly desired.
