Principal Software Engineer

What you’ll achieve

As a Cloud Orchestration Software Principal Engineer, you will work as part of PowerScale’s Cloud and Foundation engineering team to design and implement the orchestration stack to deliver PowerScale in the Public cloud. You are an engineer who contribute fresh ideas to the areas of cloud storage as a service, automation, networking, and monitoring. You will be asked to identify and solve unique problems presented by PowerScale’s scale-out architecture in the cloud.

You will:

  • Build automation to stand up PowerScale clusters in Public Cloud providers environments to enable PowerScale Storage as a Service.

  • Develop RESTful APIs for both internal and customer facing services.

  • Architect and developcontainerized microservices to implement orchestration tasks such as: Provisioning, billing, and management operations.

  • Experience with CICD and test-driven development.

  • Work inside cloud providers platforms to create Marketplace listings for service.

  • Automate and setup Cloud SDN networking to enable internal communication between orchestration stack and PowerScale clusters.

  • Manage individual projects priorities, deadlines and deliverables.

  • Consult and collaborate with other developers and QA engineers within other teams in the PowerScale organization.

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field or equivalent practical experience.

  • 8+ years of experience as a software developer.

  • Extensive coding experience with Python.

  • Extensive experience working with Public cloud platforms (Microsoft Azure, Google GCP, and Amazon AWS).

  • Experience with containerized orchestration systems (Kubernetes, Rancher, etc).

  • Familiar with authentication frameworks such as Oauth and SAML.

  • Strong communication and debugging skills.

  • Experience developing within large scale distributed systems.

  • Experience working with Unix/Linux/BSD operating systems.

  • Experience with source management tools such as GIT.

  • Automation of both bare-metal and virtual machine provisioning.

  • Experience developing Kubernetes CRDs, Operators, and Helm charts.

  • Experience with FreeBSD, with notable contributions to the FreeBSD open source community.

  • Experience with Network Virtualization and/or Software Defined Networking (SDN).

  • Experience with tools such as Bugzilla, Jira.

  • Agile development experience.


  • Development of the PowerScale Cloud Orchestration stack to bring PowerScale’s storage platforms into the Public cloud– starting from the ground up design to developing and running scalable containerized microservices.

  • Champion design and implementation requirements for future PowerScale cloud Storage as a Service products.

  • Provides full design, planning, configuration, documentation, deployment and top-level support ownership of storage infrastructure technologies.

  • Identifies design requirements and makes recommendations for orchestration, provisioning, and storage control plane operations.

  • Designs PowerScale Cloud orchestration storage solutions per business requirements. This includes whiteboarding, solutioning, implementing, testing, and deploying features.

  • Researches and compares tools, frameworks, and platforms that can be leveraged in the cloud orchestration stack.

  • Understands storage virtualization, traditional networking, cloud networking, workload automation, storage provisioning, and as a service business model.

  • Able to troubleshoot orchestration stack, compute, networking, and storage components.

  • Collaborates with multiple teams to determineconfiguration, instance sizes, and required fault tolerances for the development of templates for the orchestration stack to utilize for provisioning and maintenance.

  • Leads or participates in the software development lifecycle, which includes research, new development, modification, security, correction of errors, reuse, re-engineering and maintenance of software products.

  • Project/daily tasks managed in an agile model and ability to pivot fast when needed.

  • Gathers business requirements and participates in product definition and feature prioritization, including customer usability studies.

  • Performs competitive analysis for features at a product level scope. Leads the testing and fixing of new or enhanced products.

  • Creates technical documentation of software products/solutions.

  • Assists with the development and review of end user and technical end user documentation.

  • Drives idea generation for new software products, or for the next version of an existing product. Protects Intellectual property by working appropriate legal elements (ex: procurement, patents, and open source).

  • Responsible for the delivery of products within budget, schedule and quality guidelines. Works with the team to develop, maintain, and communicate current development schedules, timelines and development status.

  • Makes changes to system software to correct errors in the original implementation and creates extensions to existing programs to add new features or performance improvements.

  • Designs and develops major functional or performance enhancements for existing products/services, or produces new software products or tools.

  • Reviews requirements, specifications and designs to assure product quality; develops and implements plans and tests for product quality or performance assurance.
